Abstract

Removal of hydrocarbons from fluid media such as air and water is effected by contact with a sorbent produced by heating active carbon to 300-1300 degrees C (pref. 700-1100 degrees C) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a volatile acid-forming substance. The sorbent must contain 5 (pref. 1) wt. % residual catalyst. (N.B., the term hydrocarbons includes halogenated and oxygenated hydrocarbons). The process is esp. useful for removing traces of vinyl chloride from air or CHCl3 from water. The catalyst treatment greatly increases the sorption capacity of the active carbon (e.g. by 10-150%).
