Abstract

1,159,781. Measuring atmospheric radioactivity. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 19, 1966 [July 30, 1965], No. 32450/66. Heading G1A. Uranium in the atmosphere is detected by programme controlled means for sucking samples of air through a filter, and moving the filter to a radiation detector which distinguishes uranium from radon by detecting the 185KeV gamma peak of U235 or the 4À2 to 4À7 MeV alpha peaks of U234, U235 and U238. Samples of air are drawn from a number of pipes in sequence under the control of a programmer actuating electromagnetic valves in fluid lines controlling pneumatic valves in the pipes. The samples are drawn into a measuring head at 10, Fig. 2, by suction applied at 102. The samples fill an annular member 114 in air-tight contact with a filter strip 62 so that radio-active particles in the air are deposited on the strip, as the air passes to outlet 102. The radio-activity which collects on the strip is measured by a scintillation counter 44, the output of which is fed to a pulse height analyzer which counts only pulses due to uranium and ignores pulses due to natural radio-activity (e.g. of radon). After each measurement, cam 90 lifts the annular member 114 clear of the strip 62 and motor 100 winds a fresh length of strip under the scintillator 44.
