Abstract

1,159,333. Producing a vacuum. SOC. GENERALE DU VIDE. Jan. 27, 1967 [Jan. 28. 1966], No.4161/67. Heading F1N. A vacuum pumping device comprises a bellshaped vessel 1 evacuated initially by conventional pumps P, S mounted on a base-plate 2 and maintained evacuated by a gas absorptive assembly disposed within the vessel and surrounding a working zone 17 of the device, the absorptive assembly comprising a double-wall 18 cooled to below -170‹ C., wires 22 of a metal vaporizing at elevated temperature and screens 23 of, e. g., molybdenum, partially enclosing the wires. Cooling of the double-wall 18 is by liquid nitrogen supplied to the space between the walls through a pipe 19. The wires 22 are preferably of titanium and each is connected in series with its screen 23 so as to be heated by electrical current supplied through conductors 24, 25. Heating elements 15 and cooling pipes 16 are disposed on the outside of the vessel 1. The initial vacuum is produced by the sorption pump 5 followed by heating of the vessel using the elements 15 with, if necessary, other heating means. After cooling the vessel, the ionic pump(s) P is or are started. The vacuum is thereafter maintained by cooling the double-wall and heating the wires 22 and screens 23.
