Abstract

1,159,268. Making bearing shells; bending. UNIVERSL METALLIC PACKING CO. Ltd. 22 Nov., 1967 [23 Nov., 1966], No. 52438/66. Headings B3A and B3E. A method of forming a bearing shell from a flat strip comprises forcing the strip longitudinally through a passage which is curved to the desired curvature of the shell, and the shell is formed around a roller which partly defines the passage. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a flat bed 11 with a guide groove along which the strip 13 is moved by a pusher 14. Discrete pieces or continuous strip may be used. At the end of the bed is a curved member 16 which bends the strip so that it curls round a roller 15 which is rotatable about its own axis. Bolted to each side of the bed are cheeks 24. One of these cheeks supports a hollow spindle 26 on which the roller is mounted. A plunger 28 which can slide into the spindle against a spring 29 has fixed to it a plate 31 which is connected by three rods 32 to a part-annular ejector ring 33. The other cheek 24 has a bore through which the formed shells can slide. In operation there are three shells in the apparatus at any time. The last formed shell occupies the position shown at 19, the previously formed shell has been moved by the ejector 33 to the position 21 and in this position, fills the annular clearance between the roller 15 and the bore in the cheek 24, so that the outer end of the cantilevered shaft 26 is supported. The preceding shell 22 is ejected from the cheek plate 24 when the shell 19 is moved to the right to the position 21. A crosspiece 17 above the guide groove keeps the strip flat transversely until it enters the curving passage.
