Abstract

1365561 Shearing; marking USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 12 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 37963/71 Headings B3W and B3Q Elongated stock 12, such as a continuouslycast billet, is sheared into billet lengths 32 by a reciprocatory shear having a movable blade 70 and a stationary blade 60, a device 80 on one or both of the blade assemblies 56, 58 marking the stock during shearing. In a flying upcut shear, Fig. 2, both blade assemblies are mounted on a carriage 38 which is reciprocable along rails 42, 46 by means of an hydraulic cylinder 50. A support table 90 driven along the rails 42 is pivoted to the blade assembly 58 to rise with it when an hydraulic cylinder 86 is actuated. A hold down 110 yieldingly resists upward movement of the blade assembly 58. Front and rear crop scrap shoots 118, 120 are provided, the latter being raised by a cylinder (not shown) to act as a stock support until the tail of the stock approaches the shear. The stock is fed through the shear by rolls 76 or 132 and 24 and guided by a flared tube 74. Four cast strands 12 fed side-by-side from a mould (14) Fig. 1 (not shown), through straighteners (18), (22), furnaces (26) and reduction mills (28a and 28b) are fed to shear where the strand number is marked on each strand by, e.g. parallel rods (82), Fig. 6 (not shown), letters, figures &c., Figs. 13-15 (not shown). Billets leave the shear 30 along paths L1-L4, billets in paths L1 and L4 activating sensors 142 which cause pushers 146 to move those lengths close to paths L2 and L3 respectively. Rollers 24 move the billets to further sensors 142a associated with stops 154 which are moved out of the feed path to release lengths in a predetermined sequence for delivery via a fixed stop 143 and a feed table 126 to a station 158 for further marking at 160 and discharge on rollers 24. The blades may be shaped to embrace one or several bars of circular cross-section, Figs. 12a and 12b, a marking device being mounted in each bar recess. The shear path may be at 45 degrees to the vertical, (Fig. 11, not shown).
