Abstract

1406200 Dividing rolled lengths SCHLOEMANN AG 26 Sept 1973 [30 Sept 1972] 45067/73 Heading B3W To divide rolled lengths of stock into saleable lengths, each rolled length is divided, e.g. by shears, into a number of multiple lengths, at least the last one of which is equal to an integral multiple of a saleable length plus a discard length and the remainder of which are equal to an integral multiple of a saleable length, the or each length which includes the discard length being longer than any of the integral multiple lengths and all the multiple lengths being respectively not greater than nor less than the maximum or minimum length permitted by a subsequent cooling bed in which the multiple lengths are cooled, the multiple lengths from a number of rolled lengths are collected into batches and the batches are divided, by a saw or shears, into saleable lengths and at least one discard length. As shown, the optimum saleable length VL and prospective discard length RL of a rolled bar is calculated in a computer 9 before the bar is fed to a flying shear 3 from the charge weight and by taking into account the preceding and following bars, the specified saleable length and the cooling bed length. A photocell 8 signals the passage of the leading end of a bar and a tachometer 12 signals the bar velocity to the computer 9 which controls the operation of the shear 3 via a pulse transmitter 11. To allow for deviations from the pre-calculated total rolled length when the bar is divided, the multiple lengths are precalculated so that the last one before the multiple length including the discard length on the last two will be cut shorter by at least one saleable length than the maximum multiple length. Detectors 10 preceding the last roller pair 1 measure variations from the total length and feed the data to the computer which causes this or these shorter lengths to be cut longer or shorter than the precalculated length. The multiple lengths are decelerated on roller table 4, and passed through cooling bed 5 to be assembled in batches on a roller table 6 for simultaneous cutting by a saw or shear 7, the discard length being removed laterally manually or using a driven pusher. The precalculations ensure that if there is more than one multiple length which includes a discard length RL in a batch, the multiple lengths are the same so that the discard lengths are left on the table by the same severing stroke of cutter 7.
