Abstract

1,041,963. Making bars and wires. J. H. B. CARDOSO. May 6, 1965 [May 21, 1964], No. 19114/65. Heading B3A. In a method of making bars or wires the material is cut into commercial lengths immediately after leaving the finishing stand of a rolling mill and the cut pieces fall into a liquid cooling bath which is preferably agitated by compressed air. The material is cut by a flying shear having two roller cutters which may have a peripheral speed slightly higher than the linear speed of the work in order to facilitate separation of the cut lengths. Alternatively the cut lengths may be separated by the action of a magnetic field or a compressed air jet. The cut lengths are removed from the cooling bath by a mechanical conveyer. Where two lines are producing bar or wire a flying shear is provided for each line and a common cooling bath may be used.
