Abstract

1280660 Rolling gears LANDIS MACHINE CO 3 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 58979/69 Heading B3M A gear rolling apparatus comprises a mandrel 62 which supports the workpiece W and a pair of gear rolling dies 20, 22 which have guide rings 84, 86 attached to the die shafts 24, 34 and which roll on a guide ring 88 attached to the mandrel when the dies are in their innermost position. The rings ensure that the workpiece is rolled concentric with its axis. The apparatus is identical with that of Specification 1,205,661 except that it includes the guide rings. The guide ring 88 is a sliding fit on the mandrel 62 to allow replacement. The rings do not engage until the movable axis die 22 and the fixed axis die 20 have fully rolled the workpiece. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the guide ring (96) on the mandrel has a tapered surface and the guide rings (100), (102) on the die shafts have crowned surfaces. This allows gears with slightly larger or smaller pitch circles to be rolled.
