Abstract

1,159,209. Lithium fluoride, lithium sulphide. TRW Inc. 21 Nov., 1966, No. 52074/66. Heading C1A. The reaction between sulphur hexafluoride and lithium or a lithium alloy to produce lithium fluoride and lithium sulphide is used as a source of heat in a heat engine or for conversion to electricity by the thermoelectric effect. The reaction may be initiated by admitting a trickle of oxygen, water or a dilute acid on to the lithium prior to admitting the SF 6 . The rate of the reaction may be controlled by metering the flow of SF 6 into the reacting mass. Preferred lithium alloys comprise those containing at least 50% lithium, up to 50% of aluminium with the addition of any of Na, Be, Mg, K and Ca, in an amount up to 25% by weight.
