Abstract

A thrust for rocket motors is produced by reacting a light metal, or metal hydride, Zr, ZrH2 or AlH3, with an oxidant composed essentially of perchloric acid dihydrate. The oxidant can contain 59-77% by weight of perchloric acid, 0-15% nitric acid, the remainder being water and the three following compositions:- (1) 93% perchloric acid dihydrate, 6% nitric acid, 1% water, (2) 90% perchloric acid dihydrate, 8% nitric acid, 2% water and (3) 84.2% perchloric acid dihydrate, 10.5% nitric acid and 5.3% water are particularly in that it is intrinsically stable, is liquid from -20-200 degrees C, has a high density (1.713g/cm3 at 25 degrees C), requires no special equipment and its flow rate can be controlled to regulate the thrust in the reaction chamber.
