Abstract
1,158,501. Oriented hollow articles; cartridge cases. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 21 Nov., 1966 [20 Nov., 1965], No. 51943/66. Heading B5A. Biaxially oriented, dimensionally stable hollow articles, e.g. cartridge cases, are produced from thermoplastic material, e.g. polyolefins and preferably high-density polyethylene, by heating a thick-walled tubular or solid, cylindrical blank 1, Fig. 1, thereof to a temperature below the crystalline melting-point thereof, preferably at most 60‹ below, longitudinally pressing the blank from one end through an annular section channel into a mould cavity 5 defined by a mandrel 2 and a sleeve 3, the internal and external diameters of the cavity being greater than those of the blank and the walls having a cross-sectional area less than that of the blank, and forming a bottom 6 at the end on which the pressing force acts. In Fig. 1, abutments 2a, 4a may serve as ejectors and excess material may escape through vents 7.
