Abstract

1483624 Extruding oriented cartridge case CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 41875/74 Heading B5A In the production of a biaxially oriented polyolefinic material shotgun cartridge casing having a partially closed head end, a heated tubular blank 5 of the material, Fig. 1, is displaced upon a reciprocating mandrel 3 through an opening 7 into one end of an open ended die cavity 2, and a ram 6 then advances into the cavity through an opening 8 at its other end to circumferentially expand the blank 5 around an enlarged portion 4 of the' mandrel 3, Fig. 3, and extrude a portion of the blank through the opening 7, whilst simultaneously moulding the head by compression of the remainder of the blank 5 against the mandrel portion 4. After retraction of the ram 6 and further advancement of the mandrel 3 to displace the formed casing through the opening 8, Fig. 5, the mandrel is retracted to its Fig. 1 position as the casing is stripped therefrom by a stripper means 9 around the opening 8. The blanks which may be extruded, or injection moulded, are preheated, e.g. in a lubricant bath, to a temperature of between 80‹ and 240‹ F., but below the crystalline melting point of the material which is preferably high density polyethylene, polypropylene, or a mixture thereof. For high density polyethylene, the material and the die are maintained at 130‹ to 170‹ F. The opening 7 may be notched to define a ribbed exterior surface on the casing. The mandrel may be modified to provide in the casing a tapering wall thickness, intermediate the head end and a tubular wall of constant thickness and thereby minimize shrinkage of the head end. The die casing may be cylindrical or may taper towards the opening 7.
