Abstract

1280863 Blow-moulding SIEMAG SIEGENER MASCHINENBAU GmbH 1 Oct 1969 [1 Oct 1968] 48302/69 Heading B5A Blow-moulded articles are produced in apparatus comprising a melting chamber 6 having an opening 5, a longitudinally reciprocable mandrel 1 and blow-mould halves 10. The mandrel 1 is advanced by cylinder 4 until collar 7 abuts against the wall of the extruder. Screw 13 is operated to supply material to chamber 6 and the mandrel 1 is then withdrawn with a surrounding layer 8 of thermoplastic material. The material is then enclosed in and severed by blow-mould halves 10 and expanded by air through duct 11 in mould half 10 and duct 12 in collar 7 and mandrel 1. The article may be stripped from the mandrel by ring (14, Fig. 4, not shown) on further retraction of the mandrel or on rotation of the mandrel and cylinder assembly about axis A-A<SP>1</SP>. In the latter embodiment, a further article may be formed in the mould 10 on a further mandrel. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the chamber 6 contains a reciprocable bush (5a) which is extended over the mandrel 1 against collar 7, the space therebetween being filled with material before retraction of the bush (5a) leaving a layer on the mandrel and enclosure of the preform so formed in the blow mould 10. The wall thickness of the preform may be varied by variation of the rate of separation of the mandrel 1 from chamber 6 or by variation of the pressure in the chamber 6.
