Abstract
1,023,639. Extruding tubing; blow moulding apparatus. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Sept. 2, 1964 [April 1, 1964], No. 35968/64. Heading B5A. To a tube of thermoplastic material advancing through an extrusion die there is applied, by feeding the coating material radially directly on to the tube within the die, at least one exterior coating of another thermoplastic material. In the extrusion of a tubular parison to be blow moulded to form a bottle a coating of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinylidene chloride, is applied from an extruder head 12 (Fig. 1, not shown) via a passage 31 and radially through an annular orifice 30 on to a tube T of polyethylene or polystyrene passing from an extruder head 11 through the annular passage between a mandrel 18 and a die body 23. The extruded parison, the thickness of which may be controlled by axial adjustment of the mandrel 18, is clamped between the halves 36, 37 of a blow mould 35 and a blow needle 45 advanced radially inwardly by a piston device 47 for blowing air into the parison to form a bottle; which discharges from the mould when the mould halves 36, 37 separate. A second coating of thermoplastic material MO, e.g. polyethylene, may be applied to the tube T from a third extruder head 55. By the use of valve means the materials MS and MO may be so applied that the blown bottle has a body portion coated with both materials, and a neck portion coated with the material MO only.
