Abstract

809,534. Moulding hollow plastic articles. OWEINS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. March 3, 1955 [March 3, 1954], No. 6345/55. Class 87(2). Plastic material, after having been fed into an annular cavity under the pressure of a supply source until the cavity is full, is exposed to another pressure to mould a finished portion of a plastic article at an annular open end of the cavity, and that finished portion is moved away from the cavity end while a tube integral with it is extruded by means of the original pressure, i.e. that of the supply source, and the moulding and extrusion steps are repeated. In one form, Figs. 1-4, plastic material is forced through a channel 24, Fig. 1, into a tubular cavity 23 formed between a sleeve 20 and a mandrel 22. Then a tubular plunger 25 is raised to the Fig. 1 position, thus segregating the plastic material in cavity 23 from the main body of plastic material in channel 24. The plunger is then raised to the Fig. 2 position to force material from the cavity into a mould 26 to form the neck of a hollow plastic article. Then the plunger descends, Fig. 3, and pressure from channel 24 forces material in tubular form T, Fig. 4, out of the cavity, the moulded neck being integral with the upper end of the tube T. The plunger rises again, to the Fig. 4 position, to isolate the cavity, and a knife 31 cuts away the tube. The neck mould is again positioned as shown in Fig. 1 and the process is repeated. Tubes thus made are blown to hollow form, Fig. 6. In a modified apparatus, Figs. 7 and 9, the plunger 25 is rotatable and has a groove 32 which may be positioned to isolate the cavity from the passage or join them, In a further modification, Figs. 16 and 17 (not shown), one passage may feed two cavities.
