Abstract

1,157,468. Self-cleaning ovens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 17 Oct., 1966 [12 Nov., 1965], No. 46304/66. Heading F4W. [Also in Divisions H2 and H5] A self-cleaning electric oven uses the heating elements 16, 17, 18 to raise the temperature to approximately 850‹ F. in the cooking compartment 13 of the oven so that food soils are burnt off the walls and pass to an exhaust vent 31, where an oxidation unit 30, using as a catalyst platinum, raises the temperature to cause secondary combustion to take place. The oven temperature is controlled during this high temperature self-cleaning cycle by a variable resistance temperature sensor 70, located on the output side of the oxidation unit 30, said sensor initiating the reduction of the power supply to the heating elements 16, 17, 18 when the exhaust gases reach the specified temperature, thus not allowing the oxidation unit to become overloaded.
