In a mining machine a drive is taken from the drive motor - containing body of the machine to a cutter drum 2 mounted on an arm 1 for rotation about an axis at right angles to the plane of swing of the arm by a transmission 6-10 extending from the motor through the arm to a drum-driving reduction gear housed within the drum. The reduction gear preferably involves two epicylic reduction stages.
