1,157,031. Obtaining collagen fibre from hide. H. SATO. 28 July, 1967, No. 34791/67. Heading D1F. A method of manufacturing yarn of collagen fibre by treating a split pelt obtained from the shoulder and belly portions of timed hide comprises after-liming the split pelt, subjecting the after-limed pelt to enzyme treatment, beating the enzyme treated pelt, opening the beaten pelt to obtain collagen fibre and spinning the fibre into yarn. The fibres may be treated with improving agents e.g. chrome complex salts, aluminium salts of high basicity, vegetable or synthetic tannins or aldehydes, and carded before spinning. Alternatively, the yarn may be treated with improving agents after spinning. In a preferred form of the method, the pelt is after-limed for 8 days, 40 protease units/gram of protease is added to the aftar-limed pelt for the enzyme treatment, the pelt is dried after the enzyme treatment and the dried pelt is aged for 1-2 weeks in a humid atmosphere before beating. The yarn produced may be woven or knitted.
