Abstract
1,156,998. Automatic control of rolling. ALLM€NNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A. B. Oct. 26, 1966 [Sept. 15, 1966], No.48015/66. Heading G3R. A quantity dependent on the longitudinal stress in material passing between one pair of rolls is stored and compared with a later value of the quantity when the material is passing between two pairs of rolls, any deviation from a desired comparison being effective to control the drive of one of the roll pairs to restore the desired comparison. In Fig. 1, successive pairs of mill rolls 11, 12 are driven by electric motors 18, 19 supplied from Ward-Leonard or thyristor controllers 20, 21. The speed of drive is stabilised by tachometer generators 29, 30, controlling through amplifiers 31, 31, current feedback systems associated with motors 20, 21. When, initially, the start of the material reaches a photo-cell 16, the latter causes a switch 24 to open momentarily to apply to a digital store 22 a signal representative of the current of motor 18 which then corresponds to zero tension. Thereafter the stored signal is continuously compared at 27 with the instantaneous value of the current of motor 18 so that when the start of the material reaches a photo-cell 17, indicating that both sets of rolls engage the material, a switch 26 closes so that any changes in tension from a desired value, e.g. zero, are effective through an amplifier 33 to control the datum of the speed control system associated with motor 19 to restore the desired tension. Switch 26 re-opens when the end of the material passes a photo-cell 14 in readiness for control of the next piece. Control of hot or cold rolling, forward or reverse rolling, a plurality of roll sets, and thickness, are referred to.
