Abstract

1,005,058. Control of several D.C. motors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1964 [Jan. 31, 1963], No. 538/64. Heading H2J. The finishing train for a hot strip rolling mill comprises stands 10-20 and strip winder 24, each of the stands being provided with screwdown mechanism 26 and drive motor 28 associated with generator 30 having speed regulator 32 for field winding 34. Thread-voltage line 40 is energized by exciter 44, whilst run-voltage line 42 is supplied from both the exciters 44, 48. The speed regulator 32 comprises voltagesensing resistor 50 which is connectable to either of the lines 40 or 42. Roll-force sensing devices 62 indicate the passage of work-piece 60 through each of the stands, and are connected to sequence controller 64 for operating contactors 52, 58. Winder 24 is driven by motor 70 having load senser 72, ramp signal generators 80, 84, being provided for exciters 44, 48. Initially, the stands operate at thread speed, the voltage of line 40 increasing linearly. When the strip has passed through each of the stands, and enters the winder, the device 72 responds to provide a signal to controller 64 whereby line 42 becomes effective, and line 40 is disconnected after a time delay. Only when the output voltage of the exciter 48 is zero, can the contactor 58 be closed. Thereafter, the voltage of the exciter is increased linearly until a maximum running speed is reached. Each device 62 provides a signal to the sequence control 64 which causes the operating speed of each stand to decrease from the running-speed back to the thread-speed when the strip has passed through the stand. The increased load taken by the motor 70 is detected when the strip enters the winder whereby the motor is supplied with increased voltage due to the line 42 becoming effective and the line 40 ineffective.
