Abstract

1,156,524. Plate heat exchangers. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. 27 June, 1967 [14 July, 1966], No. 31715/66. Heading F4S. A heat exchange unit comprises a front plate 1, a back plate 2 and a plurality of solid blocks 3 of thermally conductive material which bridge the space between the plates dividing it into flow channels 5 for the passage of a first fluid, the plates and blocks having aligned apertures 6 to provide flow paths for a second fluid through the unit. Each block 3 can be drilled with a row of holes 4 to allow communication between flow channels 5. The holes 4 in adjacent blocks 3 may be aligned or as shown they may be staggered to improve heat transfer. The holes 6, where the units are spaced apart in the heat exchanger, are similarly out of alignment (as illustrated in Fig. 1). The blocks 3 are line welded to the plates 1 and 2 using a multi-disc revolving electrode assembly (7, Fig. 2), so that a good thermal contact can be achieved. In another embodiment (see Fig. 3) the heat exchanger units are built up from I-bars, the end flanges of adjacent bars being welded together to form the plate elements analogous to plates 1 and 2. The blocks 3 and plate elements 1 and 2 can be made from either metal or graphite.
