Abstract
1,156,497. Continuous casting. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 18 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 31613/65. Heading B3F. A starter bar consisting of links 76 joined by pivot pins (56) so as to flex in one lateral direction only, has a two-part head 74 (chosen to match the strand size), the casting-end part 45, Fig. 4, being held engaged with the supporting- end part 46 by a spring-loaded ball 49 until the end 46 is moved sideways by a carriage 73, Fig. 2, so that the cast strand is engaged by a stop 72. The cast strand (with only the part 45 attached) can then be lowered for severing by a cutter 71. For re-inserting the bar of linked lengths 76 into the mould 63 for a fresh cast, the carriage 73 is moved back to the casting line and a cable 77 already attached to the tail end of the bar is re-attached to its head 74. A motor 82 then draws the cable and bar up (through withdrawal rolls 68, 69 and guide rolls 66 of a cooling section 64 in a shroud 65) into the bottom of the mould 63. The cable 77 is then released from the bar head 74 and swung away so that a ladle 61 and tundish 62 can be positioned and casting started. The motor 82 and cable 77 then pull the bar 74, 76 down until the head 74 reaches the carriage 73 for release as described. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the bar (43, 51) is not raised into the mould (14) by the cable (53) but by driven rollers (38) of the bar carriage (32), which rollers also subsequently lower the bar and strand until withdrawal rolls (22) drive the strand. A first cooling section (15) is attached to the mould (14) and there are three other sections (16-18) in a shroud (19). The pinch rolls (22) are adjustable as are guides in the cooling sections. A pivoted device (25A) catches and lowers the casting on to horiozntal rollers (27A).
