Abstract
1,156,447. Electron guns. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Feb., 1968 [14 Feb., 1967], No. 6524/68. Heading HID. A cathode mounted on an insulating cylinder 3 is secured in a desired position relative to a support by inserting the cylinder into a metal cylinder 6 and restraining it axially by transverse supporting surfaces 4 and 5, laterally displacing the cylinder 3 by varying the sizes of at least two pairs of opposed conical depressions 15 (and 16, not shown) in walls of the cylinder 6, and fixing the cylinder by increasing the size of the depressions so that their tips are permanently deformed. The cathode 1 shown is directly heated and mounted on supporting member 2 secured in the ceramic body 3 and is arranged in a jig 10 containing two pairs of tapering screw bolts 11 and 12. These bolts are adjusted so that the cathode is at the centre of the opening 14 and are then tightened in pairs. After the jig is removed a cylindrical control electrode (17, Fig. 3, not shown) is slipped over the cylinder 6 until it abuts against the shoulder 8 and is fixed in position by forming depressions in it. The completed gun may be used in a cathode-ray tube of the light modulation type in which the vacuum space contains oil vapour.
