Abstract
1,155,694. Cleaning heat-exchangers; liquid seals. SVENSKA CARBON BLACK A.B. 3 Jan., 1967 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 212/67. Addition to 1,123,741. Headings F2B and F2P. [Also in Division F4] A vertical, tubular cooler for mixtures of gases and solid particles and used, for example, in carbon black producing processes comprises at least one tube 2 through which the mixture passes from a chamber 5 to an outlet 7 and means such as water or a gas for cooling the outside of the tube and, within the tube, and a scraper 16 which allows free passage of the mixture and is in contact with the wall of the tube at a number of equally spaced points. The scraper is reciprocated axially by a shaft 10 and with a stroke at least equal to the distance between the equally spaced points, the shaft passing through an aperture 9 in the roof of the cooler and having fixed thereto a bell-shaped device 21 which dips into an annular chamber 23 filled with a liquid, e.g. mercury, to a depth such that at least a part of the device is immersed in the liquid throughout the whole stroke of the shaft. The scrapers may consist of a helically wound, flat steel bar, screw-shaped bent plates, or scraping rings secured to a central rod. In modifications (a) the bell-shaped device is formed of two telescoping parts having stops enabling the parts to be drawn up and pushed down in succession during the upward and downward movement of the shaft; and (b) the outer of the telescoping parts is spring loaded and is drawn up against the spring pressure and lowered by the spring during downward movement of the shaft. To prevent evaporation of the mercury, the annular chamber may have a cooling water pocket, and there may be a pipe leading to the top of the chamber for introducing particle-free gas into the device 21 to prevent particles being sucked up during upward movement of the device.
