Abstract

A mixture of gas and solid particles, e.g. in a carbon black producing process, flows upwardly through vertically disposed tubes which are cooled externally by a liquid, such as water, or a gas and enclose scrapers of helical form allowing free passage of the gas and particles. The mixture, initially at a temperature of below least 600 DEG C. is cooled to a temperature of below 300 DEG C. In an example, fuel oil having a density of 0.941 at 20 DEG C., a viscosity at 100 DEG F. of 146 centistokes and a carbon/hydrogen weight ratio of 8.12, was burnt in a furnace at a temperature of 1200 DEG C. to give a mixture of gas and carbon black.
