Abstract

1,155,384. Air cushion vehicles. QUALCAST Ltd. 28 June, 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 36473/65. Heading B7K. [Also in Divisions A1 and F2] A fluid bearing of a grass-cutting machine comprises a spherical element (22), Figs. 2 and 4, which may be of synthetic plastics material; and a bearing chamber (24), formed in a housing (12) and supplied with pressurized-fluid through a passage (21). The spherical element (22) is retained in the bearing-chamber (24) by means of a bead (25) which also serves as a seal to prevent ingress of foreign matter. In an embodiment, the housing (12) supports a fueltank (11) and an engine (10) which drives a shaft (15) to rotate a compressor (16) and a grasscutter blade (17). An inner housing (18) isolates the blade (17) from the rest of the machine and guides pressurized air from the compressor (16). The pressurized-air is passed to the bearing-chambers (24), via the passages (21); and is passed to a cushion - chamber formed within a flexible skirt (23) so as to form an air-cushion which partially supports the machine. The skirt (23) may be formed of rubber, for example, and the machine is provided with a propelling and steering handle (13).
