Abstract
1294378 Boring bars NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 July 1971 [22 April 1970] 19165/70 Heading B3C [Also in Division F2] The position of a boring bar 3 is adjusted relative to the housing 1 within which it rotates by a region of presurized fluid which is created between the bar and housing and which rotates with the bar, and which biases the bar in a direction radial of the rotational axis from the position in which the bearings hold the bar in the absence of the flow of fluid which causes the region of pressurized fluid. The bearings may be hydrostatic or rolling bearings (Fig. 2, not shown). Pressurized fluid is supplied via a duct 21 which feeds an annular chamber 20 in the housing. The chamber 20 communicates with passages 22 in the bar which feed the fluid through a central duct 10, to a radial passage 17 which supplies the pressurized region. Alternatively, the position of the bar may be adjusted by causing a rotating region of lower than ambient pressure to be formed.
