Abstract

1,129,853. Bearings. MACHINE TOOL INDUSTRY RESEARCH. 21 July, 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 24568/66. Heading F2A. [Also in Division B3] A fluid radial and thrust bearing, Figs. 1 and 2, has a bore A which receives a shaft F therein; is provided with four equi-spaced pockets C which are supplied with pressurized fluid through ducts D, each of which has a restrictor E, mounted therein; and is provided with side faces I, each having an annular pocket H therein. In use pressurized fluid flows from the pockets C and through the clearance between the bearing and the shaft into each annular pocket H which, in co-operation with a respective collar G mounted on the shaft, forms a thrust bearing. In modifications the two collars G are replaced by one collar J, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the bearing B is provided with inwardly-directed flanges K which co-operate with the side faces of the collar J; the annular pockets are provided in the collars and not in the bearing; a pair of spaced-apart bearings B, Fig. 5 (not shown) are located between a pair of collars G; annular pockets are provided in both the bear. ing and the collar; and the four equi-spaced pockets are provided in a non-rotary shaft instead of in the bearing.
