Abstract

1,155,105. Manhole cover. J. H. DE FREES. 21 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 47213/66. Heading F2P. A manhole cover comprises a seat 11, a cover portion 27, an arm 18 pivoted at 19 and extending over the cover and spaced therefrom, spring mountings 24, 35 on the arm and cover respectively, a spring 36 therebetween and adjustable means 37 whereby the spring may be compressed so that the cover may lift from the seat when the pressure in the container 1 exceeds a certain value, the adjustable means effecting attachment of the cover to the arm, latch means 42 being provided to maintain the arm extended across the opening to position the cover opposite the seat. The device provides for emergency venting of the container, additional to the action of conventional vents 30 provided in the cover 27. The latch 42 has a portion 47 which engages a vertical shoulder 48 on the lock arm 18 to maintain the latter in place. If pressure in the tank urges the cover upwards when the latch 42 is swung in a releasing direction about its pivot 43 a lip 50 on the arm engages portion 47 to arrest further movement until the pressure is relieved. The seat 11 is carried on a plate 6 sealed to the container at 5 and secured thereto by a circular channel clamp 7 secured by a bolt 8.
