Abstract

1,233,217. Latch fastenings. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. 4 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967; 31 May, 1968], No. 47287/68. Heading E2A. [Also in Division F4] A light-transmitting enclosure is attached to a supporting housing by latches adapted to hold the enclosure in either a first "closed" position in abutment with the housing or in a second "open" position spaced from and below the housing, each latch having an outwardly-extending hook-shaped part adapted to engage beneath an inturned lip on the enclosure and being movable in an outward-inward direction to permit engagement with, or disengagement from, the lip. An outwardly-extending shoulder is formed on each latch above the hook-shaped part and is engaged by the lip when the enclosure is raised from its second to its first position, such engagement causing the latches to move from the positions in which they hold the enclosure "open" to the positions in which they hold the enclosure "closed". In a first embodiment, Figure 5, each latch is mounted on the housing 7 by means of a spring 60 which permits the hook-shaped part 63 to move inwards so that it can be engaged with the lip 54 of the enclosure 5 when the enclosure is to be suspended in the second position. Upward pressure on the enclosure causes the lip to ride up the cam surfaces 69 of the latches and snap on to the shoulders 65 where it is held in the first position in abutment with a ledge 77 of the housing. The enclosure is moved from the first to the second position by the application of downward pressure. In a second embodiment (Figures 8-10, not shown) each latch plate (31) is pivoted to a bracket (11) secured to the housing and is biased towards the first and second positions by an overcentre spring (21). In a further embodiment, Figure 12, each latch plate 231 is mounted on a pivot pin 227 slidable in slots 223 in the vertical side walls of a bracket 211 secured to the housing. The pivot pin is urged upwardly by a torsion spring 228 the free ends of which extend upwardly and outwardly through a slot 229 in the bracket 211. When the pivot pin is at the top of the slots 223, the enclosure 5 is in its first position, downward pressure on the enclosure causing the pin to descend to the bottom of the slots 223 and the free ends of the torsion spring to be compressed by the slot 229 so that they exert insufficient force to raise the latch member. In this lower position the latch member can pivot inwardly against the force of a leaf spring 241. In any of the embodiments the enclosure may be disengaged from the latches on one side when it is in its second position and hinged down on the remaining latches to obtain access to the interior of the housing.
