Abstract
1,154,229. Deacidifying oils. UNILEVER Ltd. 28 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 43234/66. Heading C5C. A process for deacidifying glyceride oils containing free fatty acids comprises contacting a spray of aqueous alkaline liquid with a coherent film of the oil which is 1 to 3 mm. thick and is not disrupted by the impact of the spray droplets, transferring the oil and the alkaline liquid to a separation zone where deacidification is substantially complete, turbulent flow being avoided throughout, and thereafter separating the substantially deacidified oil from the soap-containing aqueous phase. The alkali may be sodium hydroxide which may contain sodium chloride. The process is applicable inter alia to coconut, palm kernel, cotton seed, ground nut, corn, sunflower, safflower, palm, soya bean, wheat germ, rape seed and mustard oils, and tallow.
