Abstract
Free fatty acids are removed from fatty oils by combining a stream of the oil with a stream of aqueous caustic soda solution, the contact time not exceeding 5 seconds, and then separating the soap stock formed from the neutral oil by centrifugal force. The strength of the caustic soda solution is at least 20 DEG B<\>ae and preferably 22 DEG to 30 DEG B<\>ae, and the flow is so proportioned that it is at least substantially stoichiometrically equivalent to the free fatty acid present in the oil, this being the preferred proportion. The oil may be heated to between 140 DEG and 160 DEG F before combining it with the caustic soda solution. Mechanical mixing and violent agitation are preferably avoided, the streams being combined in a pipe under conditions of turbulent flow. A centrifugal separator similar to that described in U.S.A. Specification 2,138,468 may be used, employing water to assist in the removal of separated soap stock from the sides of the rotor (see Group II). Oils which may be refined by the process include cotton seed oil, soya bean oil, peanut oil, corn oil, sunflower seed oil, sesame oil, rape seed oil, coconut oil, babassu oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, linseed oil, tallow, lard, grease, fish oil and whale oil. The oils may be degummed or decolourized either before or after refining, by any known process.
