Abstract
Fatty acids, which are defined as straight chained mono-carboxylic acids containing 6 to 22 carbon atoms, are distilled at reduced pressure in the presence of hypophosphorous acid or an alkali metal hypophosphite to give a product of improved colour and colour stability suitable for the production of soaps, detergents and cosmetics. Specified acids are the acids obtained from soybean oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, linseed oil, sugar cane oil, tall oil and soap stock. Preferred hypophosphites are those of sodium and potassium, and they, together with hypophosphorous acid, may be used at 175 DEG to 300 DEG C. at a pressure of 4-60 mm. of mercury, in a quantity of 0.01 to 2.0 per cent by weight.
