1,153,926. Drying. ZELLWEGER A.G. APPARATE-UND MASCHINENFABRIKEN USTER. 22 Aug., 1967 [23 Aug., 1966], No. 38625/67. Heading F4G. A method of drying continuous lengths of material (e.g. material treated with chemicals) such that the material has a predetermined moisture content and/or temperature after it has passed at constant speed through a drying machine of constant heat input, comprises sensing the moisture content and/or temperature of the material at the discharge end of the drying machine and applying to the material, prior to drying, a quantity of water or steam in accordance with said sensed value or values such that the dried material has the desired moisture content and/or temperature. The material may be treated such that different lengthwise zones thereof have different desired moisture contents and/or temperatures. The drying machine may comprise tenter frames, jet dryers, infra-red dryers or cylinder dryers. The water may be applied by spraying or rolling. The material may be a woven or knitted fabric, a fleece, a plastic film or paper. As shown, the material a is treated with liquor b (e.g. containing chemicals), pressed by padding machine c, treated with water by roll e and dried in zone g. The moisture content or the temperature of the material is measured by instrument h which controls an instrument f for varying the speed of roll e to regulate the amount of water being applied to the material in accordance with the value sensed by instrument h. In a modification, the water applying roll may comprise two parts, each independently rotatable and controlled by its associated sensing or measuring means such that two lengthwise zones of the dried material may have different moisture contents and/or temperatures.
