Abstract
1,152,008. Methanating a combustible gas. 22 Feb., 1967 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 553/66. Heading C5E. A reactant gas containing H 2 , CH 4 , carbon oxides and steam is methanated over a suitable catalyst in the form of a fluidized bed located in a reaction zone, the zone being in heatexchange relationship through a heat-conducting wall with a cooling zone through which a fluid is passed. The fluid may be a mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide, air, steam, or 1.p.d., or a mixture of steam and 1.p.d. which is to be the feed to a catalytic gasification stage which provides the gas to be methanated. In a specific embodiment, see Fig. 1 (not shown), the cooling zone is a series of interconnected vertical tubes, with header rings top and bottom, which depend into the bed. The reactant gas is the fluidizing gas and is delivered to the bottom of the bed through a distributer which may be constructed as described in Specification 1,036,890. Cooling fluid leaving the zone may pass in heat-exchange relationship with gases leaving the gasification stage to cool them prior to their entry into the reaction zone.
