Abstract

1,151,766. Mixing apparatus. COLGATEPALMOUVE CO. 2 June, 1966 [24 June, 1965], No. 24663/66. Heading B1C. [Also in Division G3] Two components of a detergent composition, at least one of which is a difficultly flowable high solids premix slurry, are mixed in apparatus comprising systems for metering continuous flow of the components in substantially constant proportions, a high shear mixer and a drier. In the Fig. the premix slurry system comprises a hopper 22 continuous flow from which is controlled by a servo 86 in response to a monitoring flow rate signal derived from a strain gauge 79 responsive to the hopper weight. Periodically, hopper 22 is refilled from a hopper 21, the monitoring signal then being derived from a strain gauge 55 responsive to the weight of both hoppers. The system for additives forming the other component is similar, and a comparator 212 controls one or other servo 86, 186, to maintain a constant component ratio. The slurry is fed by a screw 210 to the additive delivery duct 204 and the combined components pass through duct 220, where gas under pressure is added from line 224, to the high shear mixer 222 comprising stator blades 238 and closely meshing rotor blades 236, material passing axially past the rotor perimeter to the exit 242 whence it passes through a rotary kiln, tumbling drum or other drier 256. A component which should be added to the mix as late as possible may be fed through line 228. The servo 86 may control screw 210 instead of a flow valve 86. The Specification gives a minimum value of the "shear factor" of the mixer, defined in terms of mixer dimensions, r.p.m., and mix feed rate.
