Abstract

1,151,669. Freeze-dried bacterial cultures. W. BUHRDEL. April 9, 1968 [April 11, 1967], No. 17115/68. Heading C6F. [Also in Division A2] Freeze-dried bacteria, particularly lactic acid bacteria and bifidus bacteria, are worked into substantially anhydrous normally liquid or low melting normally solid glycerides of fatty acids at a temperature at which the glycerides are liquid. Mono-, di- and triglycerides of natural fatty acids having 6 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule and an iodine number below 3 are employed. (Mineral oils and silicones are stated to be unsuitable). The stabilized bacterial preparations obtained can be packed in gelatine capsules. According to an example, lyophilized lactic acid bacteria were stirred into a neutral fat mixture consisting of triglycerides of C 12 -C 18 fatty acids maintained at a temperature not exceeding 45 ‹C. until the concentration of the bacteria reached a level between 40% and 80% by weight. The stirred mass was poured into moulds providing for dosage units, from which it was removed after cooling. Alternatively the solidified material could be comminuted e.g. into particles 1-2mm in diameter. In the procedure of a further example, lyophilized bacteria were worked into a neutral oil mixture consisting of triglycerides of straight-chain saturated C 6 -C 12 fatty acids. The product had a paste-like consistency.
