United States Patent 3,458,624 HAIR GROOMING AID Donald L. Courtney, Wilmington, Del., assignor to Atlas Chemical Industries, Inc., Wilmington, DeL, a corporation of Delaware No Drawing. Filed July 12, 1965, Ser. No. 471,451
Int. Cl. A611: 7/10 US. Cl. 42471 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hair wax compositions comprising:
(a) A plastic partial glyceride of fatty acid;
(b) A hard partial glyceride of fatty acid;
(c) A polyoxyethylene ether of a monoester of a hexitan and a fatty acid;
((1) A monoester of a polyethylene glycol;
(e) A polyoxyethylene ether;
(f) A wax having a melting point of 120 F. to 190 F.
The present invention relates to hair grooming agents, and more particularly, to water-soluble washable hair wax compositions.
Hair waxes for use on short hair, that is crew-cuts, have been known and sold for many years. Although these prior hair waxes are effective grooming aids, they are insoluble in Water, non-washable, and therefore are difiicult to remove from combs, hair brushes, hat bands, pillow cases, etc. A water-soluble, washable hair wax for crew-cuts has now been developed in accordance with the present invention that overcomes the aforementioned difficulties. The hair wax of the present invention is readily soluble in water and can be easily removed from the hair or from combs, brushes, etc. by simply washing with water.
The water-soluble washable hair wax composition of the present invention comprises:
(a) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a plastic partial glyceride of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of 40 to 70% and an iodine value of from 35 to 70;
(b) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a hard partial glyceriode of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of 40 to 70% and an iodine value less than 20;
(c) to 25 percent by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether of a monoester of a hexitan and a fatty acid containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, said ether containing from 15 to 25 oxyethylene groups per mol;
(d) 10 to parts by weight of a monoester of a polyethylene glycol containing from 40 to 150 oxyethylene groups and a saturated fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms;
(e) 20 to 40 parts by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether, containing from 15 to oxyethylene groups, of an alcohol containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms; and
(f) 3 to 8 parts by weight of a wax having a melting point of 120 F. to 190 F.
3,458,624 Patented July 29, 1969 The partial glycerides designated as (a) and (b) above, can be prepared by the glycerolysis of edible fats or by the direct esterification of glycerol and fatty acids containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms, such as oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, myristic acid, and the like. The product is a mixture of monoester and diester. The difference between (a) and (b) is that (a) is a plastic glyceride having an iodine value of from 35 to and (b) is a hard glyceride having an iodine value of less than 20.
Typical examples of (c) are polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monopalmitate, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate, polyoxyethylene (15) sorbitan monostearate, polyoxyethylene (25) sorbitan monolaurate, and the like. As is Well understood in the art, the number in parenthesis indicates the average number of oxyethylene groups in the molecule.
Typical examples of (d) are polyoxyethylene (40) stearate, polyoxyethylene (50) stearate, polyoxyethylene (100) stearate, polyoxyethylene (150) stearate, polyoxyethylene (125) palmitate, polyoxyethylene palmitate, polyoxyethylene myristate, and the like.
Typical examples of (e) are polyoxyethylene 15) cetyl ether, polyoxyethylene (20) cetyl ether, polyoxyethylene (25 cetyl ether, polyoxyethylene (20) stearyl ether, polyoxyethylene (22) stearyl ether, polyoxyethylene (20) tetradecyl ether, polyoxyethylene (25) pentadecylether polyoxyethylene (20) heptadecyl ether, and the like.
The wax component of the composition may be of natural or synthetic origin. Suitable waxes include paraflin Wax, ceresin, beeswax, carnauba wax, and the like.
Preferred water-soluble hair waxes of the present invention comprise:
(a) 15 parts of weight of plastic partial glycerides of fatty acids containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and an value of about 60;
(b) 15 parts by weight of hard partial glycerides of fatty acids containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and an iodine value of less than 5;
(c) 20 parts by weight of polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate;
(d) 15 parts by weight of polyoxyethylene (100) stearate;
(e) 30 parts by weight of polyoxyethylene (20) cetyl ether; and
(f) 5 parts by weight of household parafiin wax.
The hair Wax compositions of the present invention are readily prepared by melting all the ingredients together at about 70 C., agitating, and cooling. The melt may, if desired, be cast directly into cylindrical molds and cooled, to produce sticks of wax suitable for package in lplush-up stick cylinders for convenient application to the air.
In the following illustrative examples, the indicated ingredients are heated to 70 C., agitated, poured into a mold and cooled. The resulting hair waxes provide good grooming, light color, high melting points, rapid wash- 3 ability, and do not separate on melting or freezing. Al percentages stated are by weight unless otherwise specified.

What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent of the United States is:
.1. Water-soluble hair wax composition comprising:
(a) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a plastic partial glyceride of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of to 70% and an iodine value of from 35 to 70;
(b) 10 to 20 percent by weight of hard partial glyceride of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of 40 to 70% and an iodine value less than 20;
(c) 15 to 25 percent by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether of a monoester of a hexitan and a fatty acid containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms said ether containing from 15 to 25 oxyethylene groups per mol;
(d) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a monoester of a polyethylene glycol containing from 40 to 150 oxyethylene groups and a saturated fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms;
(e) 20 to 40 percent by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether, containing from 15 to 25 oxyethylene groups, of a saturated aliphatic alcohol containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms; and
(f) 3 to 8 parts by weight of a wax having a melting point of F. to 190 F.
2. Water-soluble hair wax composition comprising:
(a) 15 percent by weight of plastic partial glycerides of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of 40 to 70% and and an iodine value of from 35 to 70;
(b) 15 percent by weight of hard partial glycerides of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of 40 to 70% and an iodine value less than 20;
(c) 20 percent by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether of a monoester of a hexitan and a fatty acid containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, said ether containing from 15 to 25 oxyethylene groups;
((1) 15 parts by weight of a monoester of a polyethylene glycol containing from 40 to oxyethylene groups and a saturated fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms;
(e) 30 parts by weight of an ether of a polyoxyethylene ether, containing from 15 to 25 oxyethylene groups, of a saturated aliphatic alcohol containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms; and
(f) 5 parts by weight of a wax having a melting point of from 120 F. to F.
3. Washable hair wax composition comprising:
(a) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a plastic partial glyceride of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and an iodine value of about 60;
(b) 10 to 20 percent by weight of a hard partial glyceride of fatty acid containing from 14-18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and an iodine value of less than 5;
(c) 15 to 25 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate;
(d) 10 to 20 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (100) stearate;
(e) 20 to 40 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (20) cetyl ether; and
(f) 3 to 8 percent by weight of household paraflin wax.
4. Washable crew-cut hair wax composition compris- (a) 15 percent by weight of a plastic partial glycerides of fatty acid containing from 14 to 18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and w an iodine value of about 60;
(b) 15 percent by weight of hard partial glycerides of fatty acid containing from 14-18 carbon atoms and having a monoester content of about 42% and an iodine value of 3;
(c) 20 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate;
(d) 15 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (100) stearate;
(e) 30 percent by weight of polyoxyethylene (100) cetyl ether; and
(f) 5 percent by weight of household paraflin wax.
