Abstract
1,150,317. Fluidised bed. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 7 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7287/66. Heading B1F [Also in Divisions C and G6] A fluidised bed apparatus for coating particles of nuclear fuel with pyrocarbon deposited from methane gas comprises a wall 3 and 3a bounding a fluidised particle containing furnace portion heated by electrical resistance heated furnace tube 1, inlets at 4 for injecting fluidizing argon from tube 17 and methane from 14 into said portion, a refractory sleeve 7 of heat insulating material supporting wall 3a adjacent the inlets at 4 and enclosing the supply routes for the argon and methane, the sleeve serving to inhibit thermal leakage by conduction from the heated furnace portion. The methane gas is cooled by water in pipes (15) prior to entry into the bed and the argon is also cooled by water in pipes (11 a and 11b). The argon enters the bed through a venturi at 4.
