Abstract
1,133,299. Utilizing energy of radiations. NUCLEAR MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT CORP. 27 Oct., 1967 [27 Oct., 1966], No. 48959/67. Heading G6P. A radio-active isotope heat source is mounted within a container resistant to both rupture due to impact and high temperatures. The isotopic fuel 51 is disposed within the annulus 49 mounted upon the base 12 within the bellows-shaped wall 11. The bell 13, at the outer surface of 12, encloses a metal honeycomb 35. The wall 11 is formed of laminations 15, 17 of ductile, refractory metal and is covered by an outer oxidation-resistant sheath, 19. Heat transfer from the capsule may be effected either by screwing the capsule into a heat sink, or a liquid metal heat transfer tube may be mounted in the bellows valley. The fuel may be Pu-238, Sr-90 or Cm-242.
