Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A decorative article is prepared by applying to a transparent sheet a layer of a transparent glue, injecting a fluid into the glue so as to form stable bubbles, and allowing the glue to harden. The transparent sheet may be either rigid or flexible, e.g. glass or polymethyl methacrylate. Both the sheet and the glue may be colourless or alternatively a coloured glue may be used, or the glue may be painted when it has hardened. The fluid may be a gas, e.g. air, which may be injected into the glue from the side using a syringe. The glue may be applied to the sheet in strips, the fluid being injected into each strip before the next strip of glue is applied adjacent to it. The fluid may be a transparent cement which hardens in position in the bubbles but does not mix with or dissolve the glue. The bubbles in the decorative articles catch the light, and give attractive rainbow-coloured effects. A panel comprising two of the decorative articles in which the transparent sheets are rigid and flat and parallel to each other, with the layers of glue between the two sheets, may be formed. A diffraction grating may be positioned in this panel mid-way between, and parallel to, the two transparent sheets. The panels are suitable as translucent partitioning in buildings.
