Abstract

There are disclosed decorative laminates of plastics material, comprising sheets of plastics material having disposed therebetween a film of paint or pigment, at least one of the said sheets being at least translucent and said paint or pigment comprising a material fluorescent under ultra-violet light. Pressure is generally applied to the laminate before the paint or pigment film dries, thereby to cause spreading/intermingling of different colours present in the film.

Description

SPECIFICATION Decorative Artefact This invention relates to a novel material of decorative appearance and to articles fabricated from or containing such material, such as display signs, furniture, containers, baths, trays, tableware, door plates, jewellery and finger boards for guitars.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a material of decorative appearance which material comprises a sheet of translucent material to which has been applied a film of paint or pigment to which film pressure has been applied whilst in a wet state thereby to produce a decorative effect, said paint or pigment comprising a fluorescent material.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a material of decorative appearance which is composed of a laminate of polymethyl methacrylate sheets between which is disposed a film of paint or pigment, said paint or pigment comprising a fluorescent material. One of said sheets should be at least translucent so that the said film of paint or pigment is visible therethrough.
The film of paint or pigment may be continuous or discontinuous.
In a preferred embodiment an "acrylic" fluorescent paint is applied to a surface of a sheet of Plexiglass or Perspex ("Perspex" is a registered Trade Mark) in any desired pattern or combination of colours. Thereafter, and before the paint has dried an adhesive or solvent is applied to the paint (or to the surface of a second sheet of Perspex) and the laminate produced by contacting the said sheets with the paint and adhesive therebetween and applying pressure until the sheets are adhered together. When two or more colours (one or more of which may be fluorescent) are employed the application of pressure causes spreading and mixing of the paint between the sheets to produce random and decorative effects, e.g. an effect almost of marbling can be very readily produced by this technique.Any suitable adhesive may be employed, such as those conventionaily used to glue polymethyl methacrylate such as tricholoroethylene, dichloromethane or chloroform.
Alternatively the "glue" or solvent may be mixed in with or incorporated into the paints or pigments prior to their application to a said sheet.
In a preferred embodiment one of said sheets is transparent and may be colourless or tinted whilst the other of said sheets may be transparent, translucent or opaque in accordance with the appearance desired and the purpose to which the material is to be put. In the case for example of an illuminated sign the said other sheet (the "back" sheet) should be at least translucent.
Once the laminate has been formed it may be cut, glued, etc. in accordance with conventional practice and, if an appropriate adhesive is chosen, may even be moulded to produce articles of striking and decorative appearance.
Very preferably more than two colours of acrylic paint are employed (e.g. 6 or 8) thus to increase the decorative effect, at least one of said colours being fluorescent. The fluorescent paint or pigment fluoresces under ultra-violet light. The said light may be mixed with visible light e.g. violet light.
As an alternative to the embodiments described hereinbefore, it is possible for the material of this invention to comprise a single sheet of material, which single sheet must be at least translucent. In this case, it is not necessary to employ an adhesive although after application of the paint or pigment film pressure must be applied thereto in order to spread the film to cause comingling of adjacent colours to produce the derived decorative effect.
It will be appreciated that although the invention has been specifically described with reference to polymethyl methacrylate, it is equally applicable to other sheet materials, so long as at least one of the sheets is at least translucent. For example, glass, sheeting is suitable as are plastics such as polyvinyl chloride etc. Whereas opaque sheet material is employed, e.g. as a backing sheet, this may likewise be of glass or plastics or may be of metal or even wood.
As has been indicated above the present invention embraces not only the laminate and its method of manufacture but also articles produced therefrom, e.g. by moulding or by cutting and recombination. Whilst the laminate is particularly suitable for producing illuminated signs of decorative and unusual appearance, it can also be used to form a whole gamut of different objects, e.g.
finger plates for doors and guitars, containers, baths, car dashboards, trays, jeweliery, tableware and furniture. In fact the utility of this material can be said to be limited only by the imagination of the user.
The invention also includes the combination of an article produced from the laminate of the present invention and an ultra-violet light emitter. E.g. in the case of a display sign this may take the form of a box having a front panel comprised of the laminate of this invention and, within the box, a source of ultra-violet light. Switch means may be provided to cause intermittent emission of ultra-violet light. The display sign may also include a source of visible light.
1. A material of decorative appearance which material comprises a sheet of translucent material to which has been applied a film of paint or pigment to which pressure has been applied whilst in a wet state thereby to produce a decorative effect, said paint or pigment comprising a fluorescent material.
2. A material according to Claim 1, wherein said sheet of translucent material comprises a polyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate plastics material.
3. A material according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein said paint or pigment comprises an acrylic paint.
4. A material according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the pressure is applied to the paint or pigment upon the sheet of translucent material by means of a second sheet of material.
5. A material according to Claim 4, wherein said second sheet of material comprises a polyalkyl acryiate or methacrylate plastics material.
