Abstract

1306457 Coated sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Aug 1971 [1 Sept 1970] 41732/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division B6] A decorative sheet material comprises a substrate having on one of its surfaces a coating comprising two or more intrinsically transparent plastics compositions, at least one of which contains a coloured printing ink, the plastics compositions having been allowed to intermingle on the surface of the substrate. The coated surface may be embossed. The printing ink may comprise a dispersion, emulsion or solution of a pigment or dyestuff in water or other solvent such as alcohol which is immiscible with the plastics composition. Preferably the liquid medium in the ink has a boiling point which is lower than the gelation temperature of the plastics composition, so that it boils before the composition gels, leaving gaseous, bubble-like, pockets within the gelled plastics coating. In one embodiment the plastics compositions are allowed to flow sideby-side down the surface on to the surface of the substrate, partially mixing by gravity as they flow down the surface. Patterns may be produced by reciprocation of the applicators used. The substrate may be a fibrous sheet, metal sheet, metal gauze or mesh, or a plastics sheet. Suitable fibrous sheets are netted, woven or non-woven fabrics, felts or paper sheets. Particularly suitable plastics materials are those based on vinyl chloride polymers. A polymeric material, in particulate form, may be suspended in a suitable plasticiser such as a mixture of dialkyl phthalates, to form a paste of suitable consistency.
