Abstract

Ornamental structures such as a door grille, screen or panel or structure simulating a stain glass window are made by providing a hollow framework of, say, metal, wood or synthetic resin, covering one side of the framework with a flexible sheet material, laying the framework with the sheeting underneath on a surface and filling one or more of the cavities in the framework with a liquid plastics material and allowing the filling material to set, the sheeting being provided with a design, imprint or lettering which is arranged to show through the plastics filling in the framework. In an embodiment of the invention a suitable design is wrought in strip metal, wire or other suitable material such as wood, synthetic resin to form sections or divisions such as in a stained glass window. The framework is then covered on one side by an adhesive sheeting, e.g. paper coated on one side with an adhesive substance or a vinyl resin sheet which is self-adhesive or having an adhesive coating, and the framework with the sheeting is laid on a surface with the sheeting underneath and a synthetic resin is applied to the framework so as to fill or cover one or more of the cavities in the framework. The sheeting is provided with a design, imprint or lettering which is arranged to show through the plastics filling. The resinous material is allowed to set. The plastics filling or covering material may be clear, translucent and/or transparent and may be coloured. Into any section or division of the framework there may be embedded in the plastic filling material opaque, translucent or transparent objects of the various sizes and shapes such as seashells, pebbles, glass chippings, letters or symbols. The letters or symbols may be constructed from metal, glass or ceramic material.
