Abstract

1,150,234. Fibrillation of synthetic plastics film. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 14 Oct., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965], No. 46017/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A non-woven fabric of molecularly oriented polymeric material, comprising a plurality of longitudinal fibres laterally interconnected by shorter transverse fibres forming a net-like structure, the individual fibres having internal voids, surface pits and general superficial unevenness, and the fabric having a sparkling silvery sheen, is made by forming a film of molecularly orientable material, preferably by melt-spinning, said film being foamed by including a blowing agent in the melt, and then effecting molecular orientation of said film by known methods and subjecting the oriented material to fibrillation. Polyolefins, polyamides and polyesters are mentioned as suitable film-forming materials, and suitable blowing agents are azodicarbonamide; p,p<SP>1</SP>-oxybis- (benzenesulphonyl hydrazide); diazoaminobenzene, dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine; 4-nitrobenzene sulphonic acid hydrazide; #- naphthalene sulphonic acid hydrazide; diphenyl- 4,4<SP>1</SP>-di-(sulphonyl azide); and mixtures of sodium bicarbonate with a solid acid such as tartaric acid, or a fatty acid such as stearic or oleic acid. The films can be twisted to form filaments and the twisted filaments used alone or plied with one another can be used to form twine or rope.
