Abstract
1387298 Film fibrillation STAMICARBON NV 13 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 27655/72 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Filaments are made by extruding a melt of a thermoplastic polymer mixed with a foaming agent, and a nucleating agent, the said nucleating agent having a solidification point higher than that of the said thermoplastic polymer but below the decomposition temperature of the polymer, extruding the mixture to provide a foamed film, and stretching and fibrillating the said foamed film to provide filaments thereof. When the temperature of the polymer melt drops below the solidification point of the nucleating agent, a solid phase of the nucleating agent becomes finely divided in the melt, and the fine solid particles so formed serve as nuclei in the formation of the cells in the foam by the gas released from the foaming agent on extrusion of the melt mixture. Hence a foam is obtained having a large number of very small cells of uniform size uniformly distributed. The nucleating agent may be a microcrystalline wax, incorporated in the polymer melt in a proportion of from 0À5 to 5À0% by weight of the polymer. In the example, a stretched strip so made is fibrillated and cut to yarns 1À5 mm. wide, having a titre of 17 tex, a tensile strength of 18 g./tex and an elongation at rupture of 5%. The yarns may be twisted at 100 r.p.m. and knitted to a hose. Knitted products so made show very low specific density, high heat-insulating capacity and a soft feel, and are useful in clothing, as a wool substitute, in making curtains, and as a shrink-effect component in carpet yarns.
