Abstract

Jolting apparatus for use in foundry moulding comprises a table 13 having a stem 15 within which is slidably mounted a stationary support 19 attached to a base 20, the table being resiliently carried on the support 19 by springs 22, 23, an annular jolting member surrounds the stem and in the inoperative position bears against the underside of the table 13, and a member 28 is provided which has inner surfaces which are in sliding contact with surfaces 26, 30 and 32 of the stem, and an inwardly directed flange 37 on the jolt member 35 divides an annular cavity between the stem and member into first and second chambers 40, 41, respectively. In operation gas pressure from a source 44 is supplied through first port means 47 to 51 and 52 to the chamber 40 which causes the jolt member to move downwardly away from abutment with the table 13. This movement causes compression of gas in the second chamber until second port means 54 is opened to exhaust gas from the first chamber 40. When this occurs the pressure in the second chamber 41 rapidly urges the jolt member 35 towards the table 13 to effect the jolting action. The reciprocating movement will continue until the gas pressure from source 44 to the first chamber is stopped. The pressure in the second chamber is maintained by gas supplied from a source 60. In an alternative embodiment the support member forms a piston within the stem of the table so that a squeezing action may be effected by the table when used for jolt squeezing for the production of sand moulds. Also, the apparatus may be inverted and suspended from a structure to facilitate alternative squeezing and jolting operation.
