Abstract
1,149,556. Reserve cells. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd. 5 Oct., 1967 [21 Oct., 1966], No. 47287/66. Heading H1B. [Also in Division H2] A reserve power supply arrangement (Fig. 1) comprises an electrode-separator assembly 29 spirally wound round a container of electrolyte 36, the end walls of the container having opposite walls 24, 25 provided with weak sections 26, 27 and an activator mechanism comprising an inertia member 11, a spring 13 holding the inertia member in its initial position, a body structure including a fixed sleeve 12 in which the inertia member may slide, a hollow detonator firing pin 16 inside which are located the inertia member and the fixed sleeve, a plurality of balls 15 located in apertures 14 in the sleeve which balls engage an internal groove 19 in the firing pin 16 and rest against the periphery of the inertia member 11, and a detonator charge 20 in the end of the body in line with the firing pin. Strong acceleration moves the inertia member 11 inside the sleeve 12 against the spring until it disengages the balls 15 allowing the firing pin 16 to move with respect to the body and strike the charge 20 so detonating it when the gas pressure ruptures wall 24 of the electrolyte container, is transmitted by electrolyte 36 rupturing wall 25 and forces electrolyte 36 into the cell assembly 29. The current produced by the cell B is connected to a square wave alternating current, transformed, rectified and smoothed by the circuit shown in Fig. 4, the circuit components being mounted in the annular space around the activator mechanism.
