Abstract
854,003. Discharging gas storage vessels. SCHERMULY PISTOL ROCKET APPARATUS Ltd. July 21, 1959 [May 21, 1958], No. 16280/58. Class 8(2). In a water activated device for rupturing a frangible diaphragm 12 the tubular tool 17, provided with a cutting edge 19, is moved axially into rupturing engagement with the diaphragm 12 by the explosive charge 40, within the thrust member 23, which is ignited by the electric initiator 38 provided with a source of current from the water activated cell 29. The cell 29 is housed within a removable cover 41 which in the closed position is adapted to separate the electrical contacts 30, 31 and 32, 33 (not shown). The cover 41 may be replaced by removable plugs which allow water to contact the cell and the charge 40 may operate a mechanical linkage which releases a spring loaded cutting tool. The sliding cutting tool may be replaced by a pivotally mounted tool and the cell 29 may be in a container separate from the device. The explosive charge may comprise a delay charge so that the tool is not operated until a predetermined time.
