Abstract

1,149,443. Delivering measured quantities of liquid; sampling liquids. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 20 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 52713/67. Heading B8N. A device for obtaining a sample of a liquid flowing in a pipe-line 10 comprises a rotatable valve member 40 mounted in a housing 20 and provided with an inlet port 35 adapted to align, in one position of the valve member, with correspondingly-shaped port 35 in the housing and to be brought out of alignment in a second position of the valve member by an actuating means 45, 60, 62, 71 and a discharge means arranged, when the valve member is in the second position, to force a trapped sample of liquid from the valve member through an outlet 33. The actuating means includes a piston-rod 60 having a shaped slot 61, 62, the valve member being coupled to the slot via a pin 45. A piston 71 is mounted on the rod so that when compressed air is fed through an inlet 77, the rod moves to rotate the valve via the inclined slot portion 62 so as to trap a sample of liquid within the valve member. Continued movement of the piston-rod then forces the trapped liquid through the outlet 33. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pin-and-slot rotating device 62, 45 is replaced by a crank-lever (95) connected to an end-piece (81) secured to the valve member, the crank being actuated by a compressed-air actuated ram.
